Liverpool Student Guide
Liverpool is home to three universities and has a student population of over 50,000.
Nightlife
The large student population means there is no shortage of options for a night out; in fact, most weekdays are popular student nights. The area around Seel Street is always lively- Heebie Jeebies and The Masque always deliver top nights out particularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Medication is the place to be on Wednesdays and Krazy House hosts great dance parties on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Music and Live Entertainment
Liverpool has a strong history in producing world-class musicians including The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and more recently The Zutons. Live music fans should check out Zanzibar Club, as the venue regularly hosts live music events and provides a great place to listen to undiscovered talent. The O2 Academy is also a great place to listen to live music, although the bands here are generally more established meaning tickets can be pricier.
Culture
In 2008 Liverpool hosted the title of European Capital of Culture. There is still an abundance of cultural delights on offer all year round. The Tate Liverpool is an art gallery and museum in the centre of the city and is one of the largest galleries of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside of London. The gallery showcases an impressive rotation of contemporary art from sculpture to performance art and video installations.
Shopping
Liverpool provides many opportunities to shop ‘til you drop. Shoppers can take refuge in Liverpool One, a shopping centre with more than 160 famous high street names. The Metquarter is where you will find the more expensive, designer outlets like Jo Malone, Tommy Hilfiger and Gieves and Hawkes.
Where Can I Study?
Liverpool has 3 universities: the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moore’s University and Liverpool Hope University.
Liverpool John Moore’s University (also known as LJMU) is the largest university in the city and provides places of study to over 25,000 students. The University of Liverpool has space for over 20,000 students and is a teaching and research university. The university is a member of the Russell Group and the N8 group and has a strong reputation for academic excellence.

The University of Liverpool is mainly based around a single campus, only minutes away from the centre of the city.

Should I Study in Liverpool?
A student’s honest opinion:
“One of the great things about Liverpool is how cheap everything is, especially coming from London! If you find a good houseshare you can live in a happening city for a lot less money than other UK cities. A pint can cost a little over a pound and add to the fact that the nightlife is excellent and that there is so much to do, it really does make a great cheap night out.
If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, check out the posh bars on the dockside- you might even spot a few stars from Hollyoaks!” – Zach, 21
